This case study by the University of
Cardiff examines the local effect of
compositional changes in small-scale
landfill sites. The study was carried out
in a small unitary authority north of
Cardiff in South Wales. The composition
of municipal solid waste is
changing due to consumer habits,
packaging trends and materials that
pass into the waste stream.The
municipal waste industry is very
sensitive to changes in the composition
of its resource. The study looks at
these changes and attempts to predict
future compositions influenced by
waste legislation and changing trends
in waste usage. Removing various
fractions of the waste stream, such as
paper for recycling, will change the
calorific value of waste, for example
removing the organic content could
be beneficial to energy recovery
techniques.
Research shows how it may not prove
practical for small unitary authorities
to have high levels of recycling,
composting and energy from waste
together. It also concludes that mass
burn combustion may not be the best
option for small or rural authorities
as the quantities of wastes collected
would be insufficient for current waste
generating practices |
