This guide to good practice has been
compiled (in loose leaf format) to assist
managers of workshops to reach standards
that will result in accreditation, efficiency
and assurance of quality. Currently there
are more than 300 community organisations
across the UK supplying household effects
to people in need. Many customers want
electrical appliances and there has been a
huge increase in organisations running re-use
workshops. Presently, organisations
within the FRN refurbish more than more
than 100,000 appliances each year but
research suggests there is demand for three
times this amount.
New regulations will come into force from
January 2002 which will change markedly
the way in which these organisations will
collect, handle and treat fridges and freezers.
Consumer protection legislation will give
impetus for greater quality control and
monitoring of all products passing through
organisations, not just electrical goods. In
2006 waste electrical and electronic
equipment (WEEE) legislation is expected
and also legislation for the handling and
disposal of hazardous materials.
This guide explains the legislative framework
and codes of practice in a step by step
approach. Chapters cover workshop
preparation, sourcing and storing (including
collection and transport issues) testing and
repairing, after sales, (warranties and
consumer protection), pretreatment (before
recycling) and waste processing |
