Trials have been taking place in Peterborough, UK, of a Mitsubishi-Fuso based ‘Micropress‘ RCV, prior to making a decision as to the most efficient method of implementing a dedicated foodwaste collection service in the city. Based on a compact 7.5tonne gross weight chassis, the Micropress was used to collect a sample of domestic wheeled containers for analysis in order to check how well residents were managing to keep food and other vegetable waste out of packaging and greenwaste containers. But as Roland Taylor, a spokesperson for Zoeller Faun in the UK indicated, the Micropress was the ideal collection vehicle for dedicated foodwaste collection services, as unlike certain other options, the same vehicle could be used to collect other waste streams if required. Seven and a new ten cubic metre body options are now available for truck chassis up to 15tonnes gross weight. There has been increased interest in dedicated foodwaste collections in the UK as a direct result of government approval for a move away from traditional weekly domestic waste collections, to a bi-weekly regime. By treating foodwaste as a dedicated waste stream, a more regular collection service to both domestic and commercial premisses can take the pressure away from the issues related to bi-weekly waste collections. On another matter, it has been announced that the co-operation between Faun and Zoeller will be expanded to other sales territories, following the success of the idea in the UK market.
